How Do I Prepare for a CT (CAT) Scan?
To prepare for your CT scan, you may be asked to make some changes in your diet. If you are to be given “contrast” through an intravenous (IV) line during the procedure, you will be asked to drink extra water the day before and day of the exam. The IV contrast may make you feel warm and give you a strange taste in your mouth, but won’t last long. The use of “contrast dye” enhances blood vessels and helps doctors distinguish between normal and abnormal tissues. For other types of CT scans you will be asked to drink “contrast” prior to the start of the exam.
If you are given any special preparation instructions, please be sure to follow these so that your scan can proceed as scheduled. If you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant your exam will be rescheduled until it is safe to proceed.
Please be sure to let the CT technologist know if you have allergies, kidney problems or diabetes, as well as anything you ate or drank earlier on the day of your test.
