An ENT specializes in problems related to the ear, nose and throat. Many children experience health issues that may at some point require a visit to an ENT. Let’s look at a few of the most common ones.

Chronic Ear Infections

Ear infections are very common in young children. This is because their Eustachian tubes are smaller and not fully formed, which makes it easier for fluid to build up and cause problems.

While the occasional infection might not require medical treatment at all, frequent infections should be evaluated by an ENT. It’s possible your child might benefit from ear tubes. These are tiny cylinders that are surgically implanted into the eardrum that help fluid drain from the ear. The procedure is quick and painless, and the tubes are either removed or fall out on their own between six months to several years.

Frequent Nosebleeds

Like ear infections, many children will experience the occasional nosebleed at some point in their lives. Whether it’s due to allergies or because they accidentally hurt themselves playing with friends at Washington Park, most nosebleeds don’t require additional medical attention.

However, up to 9% of children have recurrent nosebleeds that may require additional treatment. If your child’s nose is bleeding more than once a week or if the bleeding is particularly heavy, they should be evaluated by an ENT specialist to see if they can determine a cause and if nasal cautery or other treatments are necessary.

Pediatric Snoring

Though you probably associate snoring with adults, children can snore as well. Though pediatric snoring is not always a sign of a problem, persistent snoring is not normal and may indicate a condition such as sleep apnea. If your child snores heavily and/or frequently, schedule an appointment to have it evaluated.

Recurring Strep Throat

Strep throat is highly contagious, and it’s likely your child will catch it at some point. Especially if they spend time at daycare or school around other children. However, if they experience more than three instances of strep throat within one year, schedule an appointment with an ENT.

Frequent strep throat can be painful and disruptive. Children who experience regular infections may benefit from having their tonsils and adenoids removed to help reduce the frequency and severity of strep throat.

If your child is experiencing any of these issues, call the experts at Albany ENT & Allergy Services today for more information or to schedule an appointment.
