Epiglottitis is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition in children where the epiglottis becomes infected and inflamed, blocking or partially blocking the windpipe and interfering with breathing. Acute infection was once found predominantly in children ages 2 to 6 years old.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are the Symptoms of Epiglottitis?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms of epiglottitis include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Fever exceeding 101 degrees Fahrenheit<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/albanyentandallergy.com\/ent\/sore-throat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sore throat<\/a><\/li><li>Harsh or raspy breathing<\/li><li>Difficulty swallowing<\/li><li>Excessive drooling<\/li><li>Fussiness<\/li><li>Preference to learn forward rather than lie down<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Epiglottitis progresses quickly, which is why it\u2019s important to seek treatment for your child as soon as symptoms present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Is Epiglottitis Treated?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you catch symptoms quickly, your child\u2019s pediatrician may be able to make a diagnosis without X-rays. If the symptoms are advanced, you will be directed directly to the emergency room. In this case, an X-ray will be ordered to make a diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The treatment for epiglottitis is antibiotics that you can pick up at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rxalbany.com\/\">Central Ave Pharmacy<\/a>. However, if your child\u2019s symptoms are severe, they may need other interventions such as a breathing tube until the antibiotics begin to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All patients with epiglottitis should be admitted to intensive care to be closely monitored. According to the same study, \u201cAn airway specialist such as an otolaryngologist, anesthesiologist, or intensivist should ideally evaluate the patient immediately to give ample time for preparing to secure the airway if necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can Epiglottitis Be Prevented?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to prevent epiglottitis is to make sure your child gets the Hib vaccine.
