Partners with SUNY Albany in the Development of a Machine Learning Prediction Model for Detection of Meniere’s Disease

Albany, NY – (July 14th, 2022) The mission of Albany ENT and Allergy Services (AENT), the preeminent private Otolaryngology practice in the Capital Region, is to serve the ear, nose, throat, and allergy needs of all community members in the Capital Region. AENT is now proud to announce that it’s President, Dr. Gavin Setzen, is involved in an ongoing research study regarding the diagnosis of disease states based on ear wax composition, which in turn has resulted in a National Institute of Health (NIH) NICDC-funded research grant. Collaboration with Professor Rabi A. Musah and her team in the Department of Chemistry at SUNY is helping to advance this cutting-edge basic science and clinical research to improve patient diagnosis and care.

The ultimate goal will be to determine the lipid panel of cerumen for patients who have been diagnosed with Meniere’s, compared to those from healthy patients, ideally identifying the structural characteristics and biomarkers indicative of the disease.

“Earwax is extremely common, and my colleagues and I are extremely pleased to identify this correlation and better understand the biological makeup of this condition” stated Dr. Gavin Setzen, “The grant from the NIH will help immensely in the discovery process and has the potential to help thousands of patients currently suffering from Meniere’s Disease.”
